Pathogenic Paranoia

This project analyzes trends in Asian hate crime in NYC by using NYC Open Data from 2020 to 2022. The data highlights reported incidents during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, a period associated with a notable rise in anti-Asian sentiment. By examining this dataset, the project offers insights into how societal challenges during the pandemic shaped these crime trends.

Despite the cold nature of the data, I took an unconventional approach by using light pastel colors. This color choice evokes an ironic contrast to the serious subject matter. This contrast draws attention without overwhelming viewers and challenges the norm of using traditional dehumanizing yet traditional neutral tones.

Data Collection

Data Collection

I analyzed data from Open Data NYC, focusing on recorded hate crimes in NYC between 2020 and 2022. By filtering incidents specifically targeting Asians, I identified trends in hate crime occurrences. I then compared these findings with COVID-19 data from the same period, uncovering potential correlations between the pandemic's progression and the rise in hate crimes against the Asian community

I drew inspiration from the colors of lotus flowers and their profound symbolism in overcoming adversity. The lotus, which blooms beautifully even in muddy waters, embodies resilience and strength, qualities that resonate deeply with the challenges faced by individuals and communities. Its vibrant colors became a metaphorical palette for expressing hope, growth, and perseverance in the face of difficulties.
